iOS 8 is Coming Wednesday… Wait.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 17, 2014, a new version of Apple’s iOS operating system for iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches – iOS 8 – will be released. And I’m going to advise something I don’t often: wait to upgrade for at least a few days. And if you do upgrade in the next couple days, when the installation asks you if you want to upgrade to the new “iCloud Drive” feature, select the “Not Now” option and wait that out.

While iOS 8 offers a lot of great new features and you should definitely upgrade if you have an iPhone 5 or newer, or an iPad 2 or newer, there are a couple of new features that will make a big change in the way things work with your files, including pictures, and I suggest waiting a few days for things to “shake out.”

The two big questions for me – this is the first time since iOS 3 that I haven’t used any of the beta releases ahead of time – are in the handling of Photos and in iCloud Drive.

The most pressing as far as potential issues that might arise for some users is in iCloud Drive. iCloud Drive is a new cloud document storage feature from Apple for iOS 8 and the new Mac OS X Yosemite (which is not yet officially available) that is similar to DropBox and Google Drive. However, until apps for both the Mac and iOS devices are updated to work with it, upgrading your iPhone or iPad (or iPod touch) to iCloud Drive with iOS 8 may break file synching features on some apps and on any Macs you use. There are a couple of good articles that describe this further on Macworld.com and at TUAW.com.

As for Photos, as I understand it, the new Photos app for iOS 8, while having a lot of great new features, will change how you synch photos to the cloud (if you do that kind of thing). Instead of only storing the last 1000 photos (or 90 days worth, whichever is smaller) on your iCloud Photostream, iOS 8 will now store every photo you take up in your iCloud Photo Library, forever, or until you delete them. And it will only keep the most recent or “favorite” photos locally on your device, while still enabling you to access all your photos from the cloud whenever you want. This is a big change, and I am admittedly unsure how the transition will be handled. I am sure we will know more in just the next few days.

But for now, be careful if you are upgrading to iOS 8 right now, and definitely say “Not Now” to iCloud Drive tomorrow.

That’s all for now….

“Beware” they say of the new iOS 8 download due to file synching issues that may “break” applications. We should select the option of “Not Now” due to iCloud Storage issues that may occur. I have not heard anything directly from the developers or official personnel of Apple inc. Why would they not tell their Apple users of the issues that it may cause? I don’t know, but I do know one thing, their are a ton of new features that you can use without even having to consider downloading the new iCloud feature. I’m really looking forward to this update tomorrow! We will see what happens.
